Tropical Storm Rachel threatens Southern California, Desert Southwest
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for San Diego for just the second time in its history as Tropical Storm Rachel threatens a rare landfall in Southern California.
The threat of a storm surge stretched about 350 miles from southeast Louisiana to Florida, with the most dangerous conditions expected in the western half of the Florida Panhandle, where forecasters predict the water could rise six to nine feet. Destin, Fort Walton, Navarre and Pensacola are among the communities at the highest risk.
The USA TODAY Network livestreamed meteorologist Dr. Ryan Truchelut's Thursday evening forecast for Hurricane Isaias.
Evacuation guidance has been issued in parts of Florida and Alabama as Hurricane Isaias approaches.
Be wary of hurricanes that start with the letter “I.” The ninth letter of the alphabet leads all others in the number of named Atlantic storms that have been retired over the decades due to their destruction or high death tolls.
